 Early Prototype New Shepard Vehicle

Early Prototype New Shepard Vehicle

The New Shepard system will provide frequent opportunities for researchers to fly experiments into suborbital space.

The New Shepard vehicle consists of a pressurized Crew Capsule carrying experiments atop a Propulsion Module. Flight of the New Shepard vehicle begins with the combined vehicles launching vertically from our West Texas Launch Site, accelerating for approximately two and a half minutes before the Propulsion Module shuts off its rocket engines and coasts into space. The Crew Capsule will then separate from the Propulsion Module. The two vehicles will reenter and land separately near the launch site: The Propulsion Module will autonomously perform a rocket-powered vertical landing; the Crew Capsule will land under parachutes. Both vehicles will be recovered and reused.

Experiment Accommodations

Research experiments can take sensor readings of space, the sky and the Earth, and will experience high-quality microgravity environments (less than 0.001 g) for three or more minutes, depending on the mission trajectory. For microgravity experiments, Blue Origin has developed a Cabin Payload Bay in two standard sizes.

Payload Bay Configuration

Researchers install experiment(s) inside each Cabin Payload Bay. Several Bays are then grouped and mounted together into a rack atop an Avionics Cabin Payload Bay supplying experiment power, data processing and data storage for flight aboard the New Shepard Crew Capsule.

Blue Origin is developing a Payload User’s Guide for configuring experiments in Cabin Payload Bays, including detailed descriptions of dimensions, power supply, interfaces, REMConfig software, and support equipment.

In addition to Cabin Payload Bays, other research accommodations are possible aboard the New Shepard vehicle by special arrangement. Researchers will have the opportunity to provide their own racks to mount into the Crew Capsule, and external sensors are also possible. The New Shepard system can readily accommodate many experiments under 265 pounds / 120 kg; larger experiments are possible but will require more highly-specialized arrangements.

Research Opportunities

Blue Origin expects opportunities for autonomous or remotely-controlled suborbital research experiments and demonstrations during flight testing of the Crew Capsule.

Blue Origin is currently working with researchers to demonstrate integration and operation of scientific experiments aboard the New Shepard system. The three research projects in our initial Flight Demonstration Program are:

  • Three-Dimensional Critical Wetting Experiment in Microgravity. Principal investigator: Dr. Steven Collicott, Purdue University
  • Microgravity Experiment on Dust Environments in Astrophysics (MEDEA). Principal investigator: Dr. Joshua Colwell, University of Central Florida
  • Effective Interfacial Tension Induced Convection (EITIC). Co-Investigators: Dr. Patrick Bunton, William Jewell College & Dr. John A. Pojman, Louisiana State University
Blue Origin - Software Engineer

Blue Origin is hiring highly qualified and dedicated individuals. Our hiring bar is unabashedly extreme, and we insist on keeping our team size small. This means the person occupying each and every spot must be among the most technically gifted in his or her field. Other hiring criteria include:

  • You must have a genuine passion for space. Without passion, you will find what we're trying to do too difficult. There are much easier jobs.
  • You must want to work in a small company.
  • We are building real hardware. This must excite you. You must be a builder.

Blue Origin's engineering and manufacturing teams work in a newly renovated 244,000 ft2 facility on 26 acres in Kent, Washington. We are just 20 minutes south of Seattle and 15 minutes from Sea-Tac airport. We also own and operate a launch complex in western Texas.

Blue Origin, LLC is developing technologies to enable human access to space at dramatically lower cost and increased reliability. This is a long-term effort, which we’re pursuing incrementally, step by step. We’re currently focused on developing reusable launch vehicles utilizing rocket-powered Vertical Take-off and Vertical Landing (VTVL) technology.

Early Prototype New Shepard Vehicle

Our New Shepard system will take astronauts to space on suborbital journeys. The New Shepard vehicle includes a Crew Capsule carrying three or more astronauts atop a separate rocket-powered Propulsion Module, launched from our West Texas Launch Site.

Following liftoff, the combined vehicles accelerate for approximately two and a half minutes. The Propulsion Module then shuts off its rocket engines and separates from the Crew Capsule. The Propulsion Module will finish its flight, descend to Earth, and autonomously perform a rocket-powered vertical landing.

The Crew Capsule will go on to coast to the edge of space, providing astronauts with a view to the curvature of the Earth and the beauty of our planet. After descent and reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, the Crew Capsule will land under parachutes near the launch site.

In addition, the New Shepard vehicle will provide opportunities for researchers to fly experiments into space and a microgravity environment.

Biconic Space Vehicle

In the future, our orbital program will use some of the same reusable launch vehicle technologies we pioneer in our suborbital program.

Conventional first stage booster rockets are expendable.  This conventional approach has two major drawbacks.  The lack of flight testing prior to first use makes reliability a challenge.  The fact that each mammoth vehicle is thrown away after a single use contributes to the staggering cost of spaceflight.

Blue Origin is developing a reusable first-stage booster.  It will take off vertically like a conventional booster rocket and lift the upper stages to a conventional suborbital staging point, where the upper stage will separate and continue to propel the astronauts to orbit.  Once separated, the first stage booster will descend to perform a powered vertical landing similar to the New Shepard Propulsion Module.  Then the orbital booster can be refueled and launched again, allowing improved reliability and lowering the cost of human access to space.

Orbital Reusable Booster System

The booster rocket will loft a biconic Space Vehicle to orbit, carrying astronauts and supplies for adventure, science research, and exploration.  After orbiting the Earth, the Space Vehicle will reenter Earth’s atmosphere to land on land under parachutes, and then be reused on future missions to Earth orbit.

The technical challenges of escaping Earth’s gravity well and reaching orbit have never been trivial, and are compounded when higher reliability and lower cost are required.  We are working patiently, step by step, to reach these long-term goals.
