Structural Analyst - Ground Support Equipment Engineer


DESCRIPTION: As part of a small team, you’ll analyze large steel and aluminum structures and act as an analysis focal for the Ground Support Equipment (GSE) that supports our orbital launch site, and launch and recovery of orbital launch vehicles.  You’ll coach design engineers in understanding proper load cases, FEM development, performing detailed analysis, and mentor team members in structural analysis for GSE development.  Major GSE elements include a launch vehicle transporter/erector as well as all tooling used in manufacturing, transportation and handling equipment to support launch vehicle integration and testing.
  • Detailed analysis of the orbital launch facility’s GSE
  • Identify opportunities for safety improvements and operational cost savings
  • Support facility development and trade studies
  • Mentor designers and junior structural analysts in structural analysis best practices
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget and technical status
  • B.S. degree in engineering and M.S. degree in structural or civil engineering
  • 8+ years of experience designing structural engineering projects – emphasis in steel design preferred
  • Professional civil engineering license (SE license is not required)
  • Load path definition and strength analysis per LRFD and/or ASD code
  • Structural loading calculations (ASCE-7, OSHA, IBC)
  • Proficient in the analysis of welded and bolted steel structures via closed form and FEA methods
  • Construction techniques, material selection, and testing
  • Project management experience and the ability to communicate technical concepts in an accessible manner
  • Demonstrated expertise with one or more of the following finite element analysis codes: ANSYS, Nastran, SAP2000, Optistruct, Cosmos
  • Ability to travel on a limited basis
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Demonstrated process automation experience using scripting languages is highly desired (VBA, MATLAB, Python, FORTRAN, etc.)
  • Experience with design and analysis of mechanisms and lifting fixtures
