Structural Engineer – Thermal Protection Systems

DESCRIPTION:  As part of a unique and highly skilled team, you’ll design, develop, and test launch vehicle airframe structures and associated thermal protection systems (TPS). This is a hands-on position that involves you in all aspects of design, analysis, assembly, test and flight operations.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Complete TPS trade studies, working closely with thermal analysts and materials engineers
  • Design, analyze and test primary and secondary airframe structures, and high temperature seals
  • Create drawings, specifications and other documentation
  • Oversee fabrication and assembly; procure components and materials; manage vendor/subcontractor performance
  • Design test equipment, and plan and conduct tests of high temperature seals
  • Provide technical guidance for integration
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget and technical status
  • Coach, mentor and technically assist other engineers
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • B.S. degree in engineering or related field and at least 5 years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or thermal protection
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Vehicle load path distribution and first order strength assessment and sizing;
    • High temperature seal design;
    • TPS selection, integration, and testing;
    • Structural analysis with transient heating
  • Strong mechanical design and integration skills using 3-D CAD software
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
 
Desired:
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5)
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer
  • Experience with Creo 2.0 or greater
  • Familiarity with any of the industry standard analysis codes such as Nastran or Ansys
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control
